Every year our Networking and Mobility Lab hosts a few summer interns from various universities. It was another fun-bunch this year. Here is an attempt at some rhyming of summer events, networking concepts and jokes put together as a doggerel celebrating class of 2014 summer interns.

Interns in our Program (IP) ain’t they shrew(d)?
They call it “best effort” after dropping a few

Creepy
They are much like TCP
None of them a Flake
For you always get a proper handshake
Upon receiving two mentors in a tow
Promptly close the window

Intern Bullpen is the cube some share
Labelled it WiFi as all can interfere
Collisions galore
RTS/CTS no more

Mentors sometimes receive a HTTP four-o-four
“Not found but will be back soon on cube floor”
Fellow interns can so advocate
For “Localization” is not so accurate

The NML San Francisco city tour elation
Was engineered via voting DDoS coordination

Already End-of-summer, oh-geez!
At HPL on just a 3 month DHCP lease
Not “Jittery” about exit talk, why fuss
Realtime communication, but there is QoS

Not all “SYN”
End with FIN
More like HTTP persistent connection
There might be resurrection
Meanwhile onto publication and dissertation

Patents' Tuesday Trickle?

Today 2 of our QoS Controller patents were granted by USPTO.



Personally 2013 has seen quite a stream of granted patents. As of today, the count of granted patents in this year stands at 11. Here is an interesting tidbit about the official grant dates for these eleven patents. All of them have been granted on a Tuesday. It seems more than just a co-incidence. Wonder how USPTO selects grant dates and why they all have been a Tuesday this year?

The recent string of patent grants has been a continuous trickle. 6 patents granted during 7 consecutive Tuesdays from August 6th till today, September 17th. This more than doubled the number of granted patents this year.

Having joined HP Labs on Sept 15, 1998 right after finishing my Ph.D. from USC, my journey here has reached its 15th year milestone today. And quite a journey it has been. Working on cutting-edge technologies with technology pioneers has been an extremely rewarding learning experience. I did finish my Ph.D. but the education continues, every new research effort we take on is like becoming a graduate student again. Raplh Waldo Emerson’s following quote has been my guiding principle and embodies my research career:

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

HP and my HPL colleagues created a PURL (Personalized URL) to recognize this milestone.
